$100 per BC Adult and Child Climate Dividend Cheque from Government.

...don't leave your share on the table… (ask YOUR children if they have applied for your grandchildren…)

Every BC Adult and Child will receive a one-time only cheque for $100.00 each for the climate action dividend (from last year's government surplus). If you filed an income tax return for 2006 or 2007, you should automatically receive the cheque late in June, 2008, but you may have to apply for your kids. The link is http://www.sbr.gov.bc.ca./documents_library/forms/0131FILL.pdf.

About the dividend

It is a non-taxable one-time payment to make it easier for BC residence to choose a lower carbon lifestyle.

Who is Eligible

Any individual who on December 31, 2007 was a resident of BC and is 18 years or older will receive a payment of $100.00

BC will also pay individuals $100 for each eligible child if on December 31, 2007 the child is under 18 years of age, and on January 1, 2008 the child resides with the individual, and the individual is responsible for the care and upbringing of that child.

Exceptions

Not eligible if you have been confined to a prison or similar institution for 90 days or more, this includes January 1, 2008

Getting the Climate Action Dividend:

If you have filed an income tax return for 2006 or 2007 it will automatically be sent to your mailing address. For eligible children, if you have filed a tax return in 2006 or 2007 and claimed a Canada Child Tax benefit or Universal Child Care benefit the payment will automatically be sent to your mailing address as well.

The dividend will be paid by cheque, and for those who filed a 2006 or 2007 tax return by April 30, 2008, they should receive their payments by late June 2008. CRA will continue to distribute dividend cheques on a monthly basis, as additional returns are filed and assessed. It should take between 4 to 8 weeks from the time of filing to receive the CAD cheque.

FAQ

I have not filed my 2007 income taxes yet. Will I still receive it?

If you have not filed a 2007 income tax return you still may automatically receive the Climate Action Dividend if you have filed a 2006 income tax return.

For those who have not filed a 2006 or 2007 income tax return, they still may receive the Climate Action Dividend, but it will not be sent out automatically. People who have not filed a 2006 or 2007 tax return will have to fill out this application: http://www.sbr.gov.bc.ca/documents_library/forms/0131NFiLL.pdf

When is the Deadline?

The climate action dividend program will continue until at least August 1, 2010 when the province will reassess the need to keep the program going beyond that date. This is a one-time grant but you have until 2010 to file.

If my child filed income tax, then I do not need to apply for them - right?

Parents will receive the dividend if the child is still an eligible dependant (child resides with the individual, and the individual is responsible for the care and upbringing of that child.) and they filed a 2006 or 2007 income tax return that claimed the Canada Child Tax benefit or Universal Child Care benefit. If they did not, then the parent will need to fill out the application http://www.sbr.gov.bc.ca/documents_library/forms/0131NFiLL.pdf.

If the child is not a dependant, than they will receive the payment automatically by filing a 2006 or 2007 tax return.

What restrictions are there?

You must be a Canadian resident on December 31, 2007 and 18 years of age or older. Also, you could not have been confined to a prison or similar institution for a period of 90 days or more. (That includes January 1, 2008)

BC will also pay individuals $100 for each eligible child if on December 31, 2007 the child is under 18 years of age, and on January 1, 2008 the child resides with the individual, and the individual is responsible for the care and upbringing of that child.

What if I do not receive a cheque by the end of June?

Cheques will begin to be sent out at the end of June, to those who filed their 2006 or 2007 income tax return by April 30, 2008. Cheques will continue to be sent out until August 1, 2010. It should take between 4 to 8 weeks after filing to receive the dividend. If you do not receive your climate action dividend, either fill out the application (http://www.sbr.gov.bc.ca/documents_library/forms/0131NFiLL.pdf), or give CRA a call (1-800-387-1193).
